Sat in the stand (why are they called stands? Some should really be called sitters, but maybe that's a bit to close to something else)...it was quite dark and way beyond shooting time before a deer came around...pushed him off while I was getting down..Haven't had a shot at anything since 10 days ago....coming over to Virginia this morning and saw two dead deer in different parts of the Parkway...I know why I hate those careless drivers... one a very nice buck

I remember…the air seemed built of salt spray blowing
forcefully at ones body, the sea gray foam flying off the tops of waves like
someone blowing the froth off a glass of beer, real beer like it used to be
fresh from the barrel, not the ersatz junk that passes for beer nowadays.  Beer now is “less filling” or “tastes
great” and is neither of these advertised things…beer tastes faintly like
Kool-aid now unless it’s some mini-brewery-way-too-expensive brand. But then as
a friend often says, “We all taste with different tongues.” One is forced to
ponder on how the generations are separated by much more than age.

We were on a combined operation with S.E.A.T.O., learning to
operate together in the face of the threats of the Great Bear that was Russia
and the Tiger that was China. It was the sea that wasn’t cooperating. But I,
like my fellow squids, was looking forward to a trip to Canberra. I would be a
“pollywog,” a person who hasn’t been across the equator on a ship of the line.
I looked forward to seeing the Southern Cross and the Great Magellanic clouds
in the night sky.

Instead we spent time after the storm cleaning the ship of
the salt deposited there, the salt turning the battleship gray to an
off-white…using precious fresh water to wash it clean…The ship’s XO, a hated
human who once wrote speeches for Admiral Arleigh Burke, was much more
interested in looking good than in being operational. Gear started failing at
alarming rates (one couldn’t shut down equipment in those days…there were no
solid state electronics, only tubes)…

The Captain announced over the 1MC…”Let’s get this gear
working, this is the real thing.” We all looked at each other, dumbfounded with
misunderstanding. Â The watch
schedule changed into condition three watches. I sat in the five inch gun director,
I could peek out at the carrier which was launching planes, their afterburners
lighting up the night skies as they launched, flames and noise, a terrible
force of war machines. I was, I found, in the waters off Viet Nam, I was I
found, in a war. Only it wasn’t a war in those pre-Gulf of Tonkin days.

The carrier was the Midway, which is now a museum in San
Diego. I am a museum of memories living in Southern Maryland. It was five years
after I moved to the east from Colorado before I could bring myself to visit
the Viet Nam Memorial. It is traumatizing to look at all of those names carved
into the black monolith. I remember all of those ‘support our troops’ stickers
I see all over. What we, as a nation have never supported is our veterans. We
sicked the troops on the WW1 veterans who just wanted what they were promised…we
have forgotten to treat the vets from Nam in any honest way (think agent
orange)…we now have a dismal experience waiting our Gulf and Afghanistan veterans
at places like Walter Reed.

Well, I remember them and I will toast them tomorrow with
honest beer, not the junk from bottles…

It is Tuesday 28 October, in a little m ore than three days I'll be in the Colorado mountains setting up Elk camp. Five peaceful days in the wilderness that God has given us. Away from the idiots of daily life, chasing the majestic wapiti.
It doesn't matter if I am lucky to fill my tags, because with the new regime it might be the last time I get to go. 500% tax on fire arms will not allow me to purchase any new shot guns or rifles. Our rights as hunters will be infringed as we cannot fathom.

Protect our 2nd Amendment Rights

My opinion is mine...Your opinion is yours.I don't believe in arguing with one about the upcoming presidential election on who is right or wrong for the job.

But what I do believe is that our second amendment should be protected at all costs. We have our firearm laws and they do work for the most part.

*Someone sells a gang member a firearm...what do they do....shoot someone with it.

*Or an idiot looking to protect themselves......who has no education on even how to handle a weapon in the first place.

*Protection of the home.....Most people do not lock up their firearms and then their children finds the gun and accidentally shoots their friend.

These are prime examples of why most do not believe in firearms and fears them...
which is fine, that is their opinion.
But, us as HUNTERS, are fully educated on how to use and control our firearms, we put them in safes to keep them away from our own children, we even educate our children about firearms.
On top of that, we mainly use these firearms to HUNT!
Most people fear any type of weapon because of their "lack of knowledge" about them. Which eventually, the kids either feed off their parents fear of guns or they become curios, this leads into someone getting hurt.

Taking our firearms away/our second amendment right is not a solution to any problem.

Obama apparently has very little to NO knowledge about firearms.
Obviously!

For myself, years ago, I was that person who was afraid to have any firearm in my home or near my children. But, eventually I was educated and had taken a Hunters Education Course. Now, my children are fully aware of firearms and understand what they are used for, mainly hunting and if the occasion arises, the protection of our home.
Personally, I think if anyone is to purchase a firearm, legally...
-they all must have a firearm safety course.

I know this does not solve majority of our firearm issues and does not stop the under the table gun selling.

But one should be educated no matter the age.

Electing Obama is not going to "cure" the mishandling of firearm issues or any other issues at that.

His solution is to ban all firearms, raise taxes on firearm purchases and eliminate most ammunition.

GREAT SOLUTION OBAMA! Was those your only choices?
Knowledge is power and apparently his knowledge of firearms are extremely limited.

We need to elect a president who cares about our heritage, our way of life.

If you want to know more about the true Obama and the second amendment right he DOES NOT CONDONE, please check the website below.

Elk Hunting

As the morning darkness, slowly turns light, I find myself at peace. I am sitting on a hillside, slowly glassing for elk, the comfortable weight of my rifle across my knees. I hear birds waking up and starting to make noise, the rustle of leaves as chipmunks and squirrels start running around. My brother nudges me, and whispers, look left. I slowly swing my binos to the left, and there are 3 does and a 3x3 buck, 150 yards away. They are slowly working towards the christmas trees, heading to their beds. Then from below us, we hear a cow bark. A limb cracks, and the elk start coming up the hill heading towards the timber. I shoulder my rifle, and watch the lead cow come into view. Then a calf, 5 more cows, and a spike bull. I keep my rifle up, because I know the big bull will be last. Suddenly my scope is filled with antler tips, as the big bull walks into view. I click off the safety, and wait for the clear shot. All of a sudden, I can not see the elk anymore, the fog rolled back in and is taunting me. The fog is swirling, back and forth, I can just make out an elk where the bull was located, but can no longer see antlers. Suddenly the fog lifts again, as if to say, "ok, I have teased you enough". The elk are still there, they have started to feed on the hillside, 300 yards away. The bull puts his head down and grabs a mouth full of vegetation, and turns broadside. I hear a hiss from my brother, as if to say, "are you going to shoot?". I settle the crosshairs on the bull's shoulder, I hear the boom of a gun going off, not conscious of squeezing the trigger. I see the elk stagger through my scope. He takes 5 steps and falls. Suddenly, my brother is slapping me on the back, grinning from ear to ear, as I was too. We head over to admire my elk. He is a 4x5 bull that has a heavy black mane, and super light buckskin coloring on his body. After more congratulations, my brother gets on the radio, calling in the others to help pack this beast the 4 miles back to the truck. I start the butchering process, thanking the elk for offering himself to me, to be able to feed my family this year.Every year, we go on a quest, to hunt elk, to bring home meat for the table, but more importantly to bring home memories. Memories of the smile on my brother's face, the emotions of both seeing wildlife out in the mountains, as God intended. The good natured ribbing of someone that has been skunked. It is the time spent with friends and family, the time spent hiking alone in the deep timber, watching the sun rise over the hills, feeling the snow or rain on your face, as you watch an open hillside. It is the sweat, and sore muscles from hiking up and down mountainsides looking and watching for that one elk that you feel is there just for you. Watching a chipmunk, scamper up the log and trying to find the courage to get closer to take the snack you offer it. Hunting is much more than shooting an animal, or being with buddies that you enjoy hanging with. It is something that comes from deep within you. It is natural, it is something that makes your senses that much keener. It is how things should be.

Another fall hunt

Well, another fall hunting season is finally here. It seems like just yesterday I was leaving the high country of the Rocky Mountains. I was watching some hunting dvd's the other day and I started to get the itch. I have been so busy lately that I haven't had the chance to prepare, but it doesn't take to long for me to get the juices flowing.
I was unsuccesful last fall in my attempt to kill a bull Elk, I missed 2 big ones and this year I have another bull tag in the limited area that I hunt. So, I guess you could say I was blessed to get a second chance. The week following second rifle for Elk, I will be hunting for a plains deer not to far from the city. I got a buck only tag and have never hunted deer, so I am pretty stoked about that.
I have noticed that not too many people log on to this site anymore. I suppose that another site has lured people away, much like facebook did to myspace. Anyways, I will stay faithful and true to my friends here on the huntandfishspace.
Wish me luck this fall and I hope you all get your trophies in 2008.
And remember, John McCain is the better candidate for us hunters and fishermen!

I'm a firm believer of the 2nd Amendment!

*The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense (waiting for attack). *The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either. The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental.
  * Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you. * If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck. * I carry a gun cause a cop is too heavy. * When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away. * A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him 'Why do you carry a 45?' The Ranger responded, 'Because they don't make a 46.'
   * The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm. 'Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?'
'No Ma'am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my rifle.' * Beware the man who only has one gun. HE PROBABLY KNOWS HOW TO USE IT!!! But wait, there's more! I was once asked by a lady visiting us if I had a gun in the house. I said I did. She said 'Well I certainly hope it isn't loaded!' To which I said, of course it is loaded, can't work without bullets!' She then asked, 'Are you that afraid of some one evil coming into your house?'
My reply was, 'No not at all. I am not afraid of the house catching fire either, but I have fire extinguishers around, and they are all loaded too.'
To which I'll add, having a gun in the house that isn't loaded is like having a car in the garage without gas in the tank.
I'm a firm believer of the 2nd Amendment! If you are too, please forward. HAVE A NICE DAY But don't Monkey with Me!

To Hanker or Hunker

Hanker…as in to hanker for…well I have a hankering to go yonder…yes indeed, I hanker to go yonder. I wonder on the etymology of words such as hanker and yonder and ponder even more why they show up more often in western novels and lore than eastern novels and lore. I couldn’t imagine Captain Ahab stating he had a hankering for Moby Dick for instance, or that the great white whale was yonder. They used to yell, “There she blows!” Except that the Air Force flies into the wild blue yonder wherever that may be, I reckon we don’t any longer go yonder. Nor do we eat succotash, which was quite common to eat in my youth leading me to despise lima beans, as one of the two foods I refuse to eat, the other being ???r.
Anyway I am getting older, in a scant three months the mythical age of doom (65) arrives. One is supposed to retire at 65; one has to caulk one’s joints in order to keep them from leaking, and then grease them to get them working again…the problem is, I don’t feel like 65 and I don’t wish to retire. Still, more and more I hanker to go yonder. My form of ‘restless leg syndrome’ is to go yonder which is tantamount to stating I’d like to just “walk-about” as the Aussies say.
Problem is that the trappings of civilization have crept perniciously into my life, especially since moving east. The east is full of needy people rushing hither and thither creating a massive gridlock of nastiness, poverty and excess, and anger at those around. It is more important to get nowhere faster than one’s companions on the expressways which leads to an endless rash of accidents in the same places, day after day, in a maddening cycle of repetitiveness. Those of my ilk develop coping mechanisms, like listening to recorded books. The current trove of books includes, The Founding Brothers a book about those who formed our country. Yes, politics and ambition were a??? and thriving in the cauldron of our countries formation, nurturing the dichotomy of state’s rights versus federalism. There was a fascinating treatise on the Aaron Burr, Alexander Hamilton duel. Interestingly, Hamilton had hatched a plan (nothing to do with the duel which was some years later) to assume all of the State’s debt and make it a national debt, he was a Federalist and wanted to deposit the monies needed with a group of New York Bankers, he was also the Treasurer at that time and thus sought to consolidate his power as well. You do see where this leads as a parallel to what we are currently doing. In this morning’s paper AIG was mentioned, you know the company we gave an 80 billion bailout to…well their ex CFO, now a consultant gets a million a month in consulting fees, the CEO has paid himself a five million bonus and a group of executives used four hundred thousand for a party in a luxury resort. All this admitted to Congress yesterday. The best tradition of Hamiltonian politics laid bare.
What is incredibly interesting is, that even after a civil war we still are fighting the same dualism, with the President on one side and the Congress on the other, both trying to be the usurpers of power and driven to excess shouting down the opposition only now with sound bites and not with meaningful coherent argument.
Maybe it is this that has driven my hankering, an urgent flowing from my spirit, needing to get away from the pressures crafted by the modern world. What I have is my deer stand, a place to hunker in and hanker away, until that too becomes needed by the developers or the drillers for unneeded oil. Then I am certainly going yonder.
